Talk about authentic learning 

This past month, Pudong campus middle school students had the opportunity to take part in the third annual MS Pudong French trip. In thefirst year of this program, and following an initiative from Puxi middle school, I took some of my French students to visit two cities in central France. On that trip, students visited the main sites of Paris, explored the lovely city of Tours, and also visited beautiful castles along the Loire valley. 

Last year I took another group of students to the French Riviera. On that trip, students travelled by TGV (the French high-speed train) to the Aix-en-Provence region and visited by bus the cities of Avignon, Montpellier, Marseille, Cannes, and Nice. This year a new group went to Paris for a highly active and highly educational experience in the City of Lights. 

One can never have enough of Paris. Since my time as an undergrad student at the Sorbonne, I have been back several times, and excitement has been my companion every time. It is this excitement that I try to impart to the students I take there. In an attempt to increase the students’ opportunity to speak French outside of the classroom, the students stayed with host families on this trip. Students also went for French lessons at a public school with a local teacher. A regular day for the students would include breakfast with the host families, French lessons in the morning, packed lunch on the go (sandwich au jambon et jus d’orange anyone?), a cultural activity in downtown Paris in the afternoon, dinner with the host family, and homework time before bed. Students visited the Tour Ei$el, the Arc de Triomphe, the Champs Elysées, the Sacre-Coeur, the Notre-Dame, the Quartier Latin, the Chateau de Versailles, and the Louvre. 

In addition, students were able to compare and contrast their schooling at SAS with that of a student in the regular French system, they were exposed to di$erent French accents, they were able to make curriculum connections during all the cultural activities, and, most importantly, they had the opportunity to interact with people that had no vested interested in their learning. Furthermore, students received almost daily lessons from Mr. Yun, a MS Pudong PE and health teacher (who has been a regular chaperone on this trip), about safety, mental and physical health, and nutrition. 

The highlight of the trip for me was how the students consistently tried to speak French with the people around them, myself included. !is trip featured a small group of students: Annie Chen, Joy Xie, David Yang, Yi Chen Cao, Nagissa Castella, Georgia Dodd, Elaine Hong, and Malena Cheng. Connections and relationships were most certainly strengthened during the trip, and I was able to learn something new about every single one of the students. Annie and David were the linguists, trying to use their French at every opportunity. Joy and Malena, who in class are always devoted to their work and always on task, were the video-gamers. Yi Chen, who is a self-proclaimed computer geek, became our transport guru, curious about every aspect of the Parisian train systems. Nagissa was our fashionista, coming to the rescue whenever someone committed a fashion faux pas. Georgia was the top model; she was a natural for the cameras and no matter how hard she tried, she could never look bad in a photo. And finally Elaine, who had a soft spot for the catwalk. Who knows, one day some of these students may just be back in Paris making their dreams come true.
