Only a few know the terrifying truth--an outcast Earth scientist, a rebellious alien inhabitant of a dying planet, a lunar-born human intuitionist who senses the imminent annihilation of the Sun. They know the truth--but who will listen? They have foreseen the cost of abundant energy--but who will believe? These few beings, human and alien, hold the key to the Earth's survival.

'Against stupidity, the gods themselves contend in vain' I really like the title of this book, because it showcases Issac's overarching thesis that most people will blindfold themselves when the truth runs contrary to their own short-term interest.
In this book, Issac described a scenario where parallel universes can transfer matters, energy, momentum, and natural laws through a pump, but catastrophic prospects lie ahead of the comfortable life with endless free energy that most people crave for and are only concerned of...

The whole story takes place at three settings: the earth, the para universe(with no name mentioned), and the moon(a colony of Earthman). These three groups of people hold their own interests but at the same time their interests are interconnected. In the face of the explosion of the sun and the death of all people on earth, some take it as a reasonable price to pay for free energy, some stubbornly ignore it to preserve his own power (how sarcastic it is that many people in real life resemble Hallam who can't see the ethereality of power and fame), some showed a wisp of pity but unwilling to take this risk to dig this matter further due to fear, some put all their eggs in one basket and decided they have nothing to lose, some exuded humanitarian love even when she considers herself to be a machine...
It's really interesting to read that even the 'hero's lionized by the public in the end started off his venture out of personal grudge against an authority figure, and every character in this book has their merits as well as flaws. The most ironic scene is when the triad melted the last time and figured out that they are the Estwald each one of them are trying to find, defeat, and hate.
I think it's less impressive to read this book when parallel universe is such a common notion nowadays, and it disappoints me that in the end the solution comes too easily when you consider the severity and scale of the problem. However, this book is applaudable that it depicts three different perspectives of the same story, and teaches us a great lesson that it needs manoeuvre and tactics when you're trying to do the 'right' thing. Only present the problem when you already have the solution, because people only accept 'sweet truth'
