At the Red Level (the first level), most words are spelled regularly, and can be sounded out with the 42 letter sounds first taught in Jolly Phonics. As a guide, light type is used for those few letter that should not be sounded out, such as the 'b' in 'lamb'. There are also several 'tricky' words, which children need to learn by sight.
