Burying the Sun

This story is about a thirteenth-year old boy named Georgi, his family, and their entire city as they struggle to survive the terrible siege of the Russian city of Leningrad.

One day, just as Georgi, his sister Yelena, and some others came home from a convivial picnic in Leningrad’s Summer Garden, they heard some awful rumors: Germany was breaking its treaties with Russia and attacking their borders. Although everybody didn’t exactly believe that was true, the possibility hung on them like a death sentence. Until, one day, the suspicion was broken. Their fears were confirmed to be verifiable. Right then, the terror, starvation, and bombing started. As he watched his city withering away, Georgi was determined to help his family survive. Too young for the army, Georgi decided to do lots of odd errands. Like picking rotting vegetables from abandoned farms, or help loading supplies from some trucks, sent by the government to help starving people. Anyway, it was because of his hard work, along with the rest of his family and friends, did they survive the siege.

Although nobody likes painful memories, this siege was something that Georgi & his family would never forget.
