I ran across a copy of this book at the library. The lens initially struck me as gimmicky, but the hidden images are quietly fascinating. The mechanics work as follows: the book comes with a tri-colored lens, i.e. 3 pieces of red, blue, and green cellophane set in a heavy piece of card stock. Each page has a detailed woodland scene printed in red, blue, and yellow ink. As you look through each lens, the image changes slightly - or dramatically. With the green lens I see a forest, with the blue lens a sleeping bear emerges, and with the red a tiny cottage appears. Hard to believe all of this is contained in the same illustration!
Each image is accompanied by brief, simple text. But it's the images, not the words, that make this book so breathtaking. As an adult reader of children's books, I often focus on the text and skim over the pictures. This book invites the reader to slow down and explore a visual landscape. I look forward to sharing it with kids and adults!
Great for all ages big and small!
The nature element of the book will open your child's eyes to what is hidden around them, just out of sight when you go for a walk in a rural environment.
