Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose went to Squaw Island to have a picnic. They found some big footprints stopped suddenly in front of a squat, vine-covered boulder and a hundred-dollar bill.
The children decided to go to Ron’s Bait Shop to ask if Mr. P had any ideas.
Ron tacked Ruth Rose’s note to a small bulletin board. Ruth Rose gave the bill to Officer Fallon. The children wanted to look for the buried treasure again.
They found a narrow path between the two boulders. The whole rock was covered with fake poison ivy. One of the boulders was a large square cement slab.
Josh smacked on the metal rob with the shovel, then the cement door swung open. Dink saw stacks of money.
The children saw a large, dark figure sat hunched in the stern. Then the figure rowed away. Officer Fallon told them that the bill they found was counterfeit and asked them to stay away from the island. The counterfeiters were dangerous.
Josh went to buy calamine lotion for his scratching. The children knew that Mr. P bought three bottles of calamine lotion. The children went to check if Mr. P was pink and his feet were as big as those footprints.
As the children hid behind the bushes, a car with the license plate said BENT pulled into Mr. P’s driveway. The man handed Mr. P a box, and then Mr. P handed the box back to the stranger. The children wanted to get a peek at the box.
They saw the bottom of wading boots were tiny pebbles and sand and Mr. Bent’s long arms and legs were blotched with calamine lotion.
The children raced toward the police station.
Finally, the Bents were handcuffed. In fact, the bents were middle guys.
