My son is learning artists from Da Vinci to Monet in his art class. We bought him children books for these artists. He likes impressionist (印象派畫家) the most. One of his favorite paintings is Monet’s Japanese footbridge over the lily pond. He wanted to see the original painting which is in Philadelphia museum of art. The Philadelphia museum of art is about 3 hours’ drive from where we live and they were having a Van Gogh exhibition at that time as well. Since he had such strong interests, we decided to drive there during the spring break, but he needs to do some research work before we go. We asked him to read all the artist books we bought for him and write down the artist name and painting name he wants to see in the Philadelphia museum of art. He did and also wrote one for National Gallery of Art in DC.
We took a short trip to National Gallery of Art in DC on the first day and drove to Philadelphia the next day to see his favorite painting. We spent half day in the museum. He was excited to find the artists and paintings that he had read about in the books and took photos of these paintings using his Mum’s iphone. We stayed at a hotel for the night and swam in the pool after the dinner. Not sure how much he understands the paintings, but he definitely enjoys the whole trip.
Pictures are: my son’s research work, cover of the artist book, Monet’s Japanese footbridge (We drove 3 hours for this one), Van Gogh’s painting and Degas’s ballerina girl sculpture.
