The Charl du Plessis Jazz trio with PD MS Symphony Orchestra, MS String orchestras, MS Bands, MS Jazz Band and Breaking Ground vocal ensemble.
We are very fortunate to welcome the trio back to SAS Pudong MS once again.They will be working with string, band and vocal ensemble students from Thursday May 26th.Their visit will culminate in an exciting and spectacular concert celebrating the centennial year of SAS on Friday May 4th at 18:30 in our PD Auditorium.MS students will collaborate with the Char du Plessis Trio in Decadence – 10 decades of Jazz at SAS.Mr. Du Plessis will perform on a Steinway piano, courtesy of Steinway and Sons and Tom Lee Music, China.
The Charl du Plessis Trio is one of the most versatile and respected crossover ensembles in South Africa. The diverse style of music this ensemble performs ranges from Latin, Swing, Classical and Funk and sets them apart from other instrumental groups.
The Charl du Plessis trio consists of Steinway Artist Charl du Plessis (piano) with Werner Spies (bass) and Hugo Radyn (drums). Du Plessis, the youngest person ever in Africa to be named Steinway Artist is the only pianist in South Africa today to simultaneously sustain a hugely successful performing career in both classical and poplar music. Since 2006 Du Plessis started performing with his own jazz trio and this ensemble has travelled to Namibia, Switzerland, Holland, China as well as toured extensively in South Africa.
The South African Music Awards (SAMA awards) are the biggest awards of its kind in Africa and has nominated the Charl du Plessis Trio in the category for Best Classical and Instrumental Album for their latest CD – Shanghai Brunch. Shanghai Brunch is Charl du Plessis’s fourth album and was recorded on a Steinway model D piano in 2011. This disc features original arrangements of classical favourites performed in a jazz style.Recently the Ghoema award for best instrumental CD was awarded to the Trio for Shanghai Brunch.CDs are available on iTunes and will be available for purchase at the concert.
