一、Most of my friends live in the city, yet they always go into raptures at the mere mention of the country.

我的許多朋友都住在城市，但他們只要一提起鄉(xiāng)村，馬上就會變得欣喜若狂。

【解析】

1. Go into raptures: “感到（或顯得）極為高興；熱情至極”，go into也可以用be in替換，后面接about/over sb. /sth. ，比如，The critics went into raptures about her performance.評論家們對她的表演贊不絕口。

2. Mere: “僅僅的；只不過”，只用于名詞前，比如，You've got the job. The interview will be a mere formality. 你已經(jīng)得到了這份工作。面試不過是個形式。

作業(yè)一、一提到即將開始的大學生活，許多學生都會興高采烈。

Many students go into raptures at the mere mention of the upcoming college life.

二、Imagine a star up to twenty times larger, brighter and hotter than our own sun.設想一下，一顆恒星比我們太陽還要大，還要亮，還要熱20倍。

【解析】

1. up to +數(shù)字表示“達到（某數(shù)量、程度等）；至多有”，比如，The temperature went up to 35°. 氣溫上升到了 35 攝氏度。

2. Times: “（用于比較）倍”，注意是復數(shù)形式。倍數(shù)的表達有很多種方式，比如，表達…是…的三倍這個意思就可以說three times as long as sth.某物的三倍長；three times longer than sth., 比某物長兩倍；又或者是three times the length of sth., 三倍于某物的長度。

作業(yè)二、今年的大學畢業(yè)生人數(shù)多達800多萬，加上由于疫情導致的經(jīng)濟衰退，這使得畢業(yè)生們找到好工作要比往年難很多倍。

【解析】

Staggering: “令人難以相信的，驚人的，令人震驚的”，What are you doing fooling with such a staggering sum of money? 你拿這么驚人的一大筆錢瞎折騰什么？

作業(yè)三、過去幾年出現(xiàn)了一個令人擔心的趨勢：越來越多的年輕人成了消費主義的受害者，他們欠下了數(shù)目驚人的債務，而這些債務可能要花數(shù)十年才能還清。

The past few years have seen a worrying trend that more and more young people are falling prey to consumerism, accumulating a staggering sum of debt that could take decades to pay off.

四、Much to the aristocrat’s amusement, the gaoler returned a few moments later with a pair of glasses and the usual copy of the letter which he proceeded to read to the prisoner.

貴族感到非常好笑的是：一會兒功夫，獄卒重新登臺，拿來一副眼鏡以及平時極少用的那封信，然后為他念了起來。

【解析】

1. Much to the aristocrat's amusement：to one's ….,讓人覺得…的是…, 比如，to one’s surprise,讓人覺得驚訝的是…；to one’s relief 讓人覺得安心的是….等等。這里是介詞短語作狀語，much置于句首用來加強語氣。

2. which引導定語從句，修飾letter。

作業(yè)四、令人寬慰的是，現(xiàn)在有越來越多人開始理解垃圾分類的重要性了，垃圾分類也幾乎在這個國家的每一座城市都得到了執(zhí)行。

Much to our relief, more and more citizens come to realize the importance of waste sorting, which has been implemented in almost every city in the country.

五、The cry had certainly come from one of the chimneys, but as there were so many of them, the fire fighters could not be certain which one it was.

喊叫聲肯定是從煙囪里傳來的，然而因為煙囪太多，消防隊員無法確定到底是哪一個。

【解析】

1. as引導原因狀語從句，as前面的but表示轉(zhuǎn)折。

2. Which one it was：which引導賓語從句。

作業(yè)五、現(xiàn)在很多年輕人感到迷茫，這并不是因為他們無從選擇，而是因為選擇太多而不知道選哪一個對他們最好。

The reason why so many young people today feel aimless is not that they don't have much choice, but that there are so many possibilities for them that they find it difficult to choose the one that suits them the best.
