In the community of Jonas, everything is so orderly with tons of regulations. People's lives are already made for them, with no changes. Yet everyone perceive their lives as something perfect. That's what Jonas thought too, at least until he began to understand the true world around him. It all started with the unusual job he received in the Ceremony of Twelve. As he spent more time with his trainer, he felt change within himself. He found a deeper meaning to his life, and tried to inform the people around him about the knowledge of the universe. After all, this is a community without love, pain, or actual feelings. However, no one except the giver would understand him, because they haven't the slightest idea what he's talking about when they're living in this hopeless world. When Jonas was about to give up trying to save his community from all the lies and blank spaces, he and the giver came up with a plan. This plan is the only possible solution, but it would require sacrifice from Jonas' side. What would Jonas choose: Continue living in this community where he is paid with respect without caring about the unknowing citizen's lives, or risking his own life in trusting himself with the unpredictable future?
The Giver is a magical story that makes our heart shatter like a thousand pieces of glass, but then bloom like a strong flower. The intense plot never gave me a clue of what the ending is going to be like until the very last page. Even when I was finished, I had to hold the book to let this whole book sink in. It's just remarkable how Lois Lowry, the author, can make the words so precise for me to think them as enchanted.
